One of the great aspects of eyewear nowadays is that customers have numerous types of glasses to select. You might need to buy safety-rated glasses for work. But when looking at different pairs of safety glasses, you might not know how to determine if they are safety-rated. The worst-case is that you think they are, but they actually aren't, and they fail to protect your eyes from damage.
When shopping for glasses, you might need to find ones with distinct features or attributes, related to style or functionality. For functionality, safety glasses are needed. They protect your eyes when working or playing in tough conditions. For instance, if you're in an environment with lots of flying dust or debris, they keep your eyes safe and help you focus on the job instead of worrying about your vision.
When we are using a laser machine, it emits specific wavelengths or radiation of several wavelengths simultaneously. Some of these wavelengths can be normally seen by us, while some are invisible to the human eye, such as the ultraviolet light and the infrared light. Invisible light does not mean that our eyes will not be hurted. Ultraviolet lasers (100 - 400nm) usually damage the cornea and the lens. Lasers in the 400 - 1400nm can directly penetrate the human eye lens and damage the retina and even the optic nerve, causing irreversible damage. Lasers above 1400nm cause similar damage to the human eye as Ultraviolet laser, mainly to the cornea and the lens. Due to the focusing characteristics of the eye, its sensitivity to lasers is 100,000 times that of the skin. Long-term exposure to the laser radiation environment can cause irreversible cumulative damage to our eyes and even blindness. The role of laser filters is to protect the eyes from damage of specific wavelengths, significantly weakening specific wavelengths or reducing them to below the Maximum permissible exposure MPE value (Maximum Possible Effect).
For laser power below 10W, protective products with optical density OD4+ can be considered.
For laser power within the range of 10 - 100W, protective products with optical density OD4+ - OD5+ can be considered.
For laser power within the range of 100 - 800W, protective products with optical density OD6+ can be considered.
For laser power within the range of 800 - 1500W, protective products with optical density OD7+ can be considered.
For laser power above 1500W, it is recommended to choose protective products with optical density OD7+ or higher.
Multiple protections should be adopted when necessary.
The above can only be used as a general reference. For specific situations, we need to comprehensively consider more relevant parameters of the laser itself and the specific application scenarios.
